Wielding a rifle and trudging through heavy snow, a figure in a red cloak leads two horses across a snowy wilderness. The frosted trees in the background frame the figure, as if nature, too, is following his lead. The man’s garments—brilliantly colored against the white landscape—further embolden him in his defiance against the elements. His efforts appear to be successful in the scene painted in the corner, where the figure, still armed and alert, warms himself by a small fire.
