Two figures on horseback cross a stream amidst torrents of rain. The shapes and movements of water—rain pelting the rushing current, subsequently crashing against the horses—creates a dynamic sense of motion that contrasts against the slow, labored, and perhaps casual efforts of the horsemen. Hagan’s pushing his figures beyond the foreground and past distinction adds further immediacy to the water.
