The pen and ink sketch predicates what will become Wieghorst’s completed 1982 painting Goin’ to Trade. A figure rides across the grass with a pack horse in tow, his face shadowed under the wide brim of his hat. The rudimentary quality of the composition adds to the frenetic movement of the wind whipping through the piece.
