Somewhat mottled brushstrokes fashion the figures of Native Americans and their horses out of subdued, earthy whites and browns. Projected from and against the figures huddled in their animal skins, the long, narrow spear adds a wild freedom to the piece, accentuated by the spirited motion of its adorning feathers. The exclusion of the view from the lookout is a poignant, enigmatic absence, and the viewer is left to wonder if the distilled tension in the figures is rooted in unanswered waiting or the dread of a coming threat.
