Though this painting’s subject is the beautifully cascading waterfall, the artist has emphasized the foreground in more ways than one. The tall, dense spread of trees are dark and defined, creating strong shapes and lines that are further highlighted by the light. Slightly hazy mountains in the background are painted in light, muted tones that heighten the contrast between foreground and midground.
