Standing Figure, 1933
Pastel on paper

A bright aura of white emanates from the body of a carefully modeled woman. Stark and confident strokes compose her silhouette, while the contours of her body are formed by soft and subtle changes in shading. Although she leans toward the viewer, her face is devoid of details and obscured by the edge of the canvas. Completed in 1933, this work is likely a depiction of Dorothea Lange, Dixon’s wife from 1920-1935. This work was once part of Edith Hamlin’s collection, Dixon’s second wife.
