Composed of loose brushstrokes and earthy tones, a man slowly ambles down a rocky street as he and his mules trek toward home. After a long and burdensome day of travel—indicated by the bulky luggage on the burros’ backs—the pueblo in the distance is a welcome and relieving sight. Black’s use of bright green, yellow, and purple in the background boldly contrast the muted colors surrounding the traveling group, suggesting the sense of relief that comes at the end of a long and exhausting journey. Admired for his depictions of pueblo architecture and Native American subjects, this work is an exemplary example of the work Laverne Nelson Black is loved and remembered for.
A notarized affidavit from January 1939 appears on the verso of the painting, with a testament that it was painted by Laverne Nelson Black, signed by the Artist's wife, Mary E Black.
