Warm light floods an otherwise frigid scene as three cowboys prepare to venture back into the wilderness. Blues and browns predominate the piece, and in both the uniformity in color and composition between the men and their horses and the common task at hand the individual is given up for a brotherhood. The atmosphere of dawn and materiality of the figures’ breath builds a mood of raw, unspent energy and possibility.
