The viewer experiences the grandeur of nature contrasted with simple coastal living. Vivid light atop the cliff and impeccable details in the painting’s foreground show the influence of Albert Bierstadt, under whom Farny studied from 1867-1870. This Mediterranean scene is atypical of Farny’s more common Native American and Western themes.
