Form, color, and composition combine as vivid and nebulous colors are framed by the stark and finely detailed silhouettes of trees between two separate canvases. While the bottom canvas presents a more conventional painting, the top canvas suggests that the viewer is looking through a window, thereby complicating both the painting’s relationship with itself and with the viewer—is the painting meant to be “a window on the world” or can it exist simply as art?
