In this generally dark and foreboding scene is the story of emigrants arriving on American soil. Fighting against the waves, the man in holds the boat close to shore while multiple passengers are led to safety. The tall man in black helps a mother and her young children up the steep hill. A large ship waits in the distance while men are tasked with rowing a small boat with loads of passengers. Long brushstrokes animate a stormy sky and lively waters, rough conditions which ship passengers are relieved to escape. However, the hill’s dramatic slope and a severely damaged tree on this fresh American shore might foreshadow the harsh conditions still to come.
