Attr. to Frederic Remington (1861-1909)
The Scouts, Friends, or Enemies, n.d.
Watercolor and ink on paperboard
Paperboard: 8” x 5.6”
Frame: 15” x 12”
Signed Lower Right: Frederic Remington
Two young men stand in a field, gazing in the direction of indistinct figures on horseback. The differences in uniform steep the painting deeper into an ambiguity already suggested by the Civil War setting—itself a large and violent complication of the borders between friend and foe. The smoky coloring throws ominous shade onto the wartime piece.
Provenance:Private Collection, Utah
