In vignette fashion, the painting does not commit itself to anything but a rearward view of a figure on horseback. The landscape reflected in the water is not shown, whomever is on the opposite bank is out of frame, and whatever the figure points to is also not revealed to the viewer. The ambiguity of the work makes it intriguing and captivating, compelling us to ask who is being looked for, and why?
