Rough brushstrokes compose the facial features of the figure, rendering him indistinguishable. This lack of detail starkly contrasts the attention given to the expressive eyes of the horse, which are large and alert. The hard lines of the figure, the musculature of the horse, and the jagged rocks cut against the gently streaming water. A splash of water is kicked up by a foot of the horse, adding a sense of life and movement to the piece. The red kerchief around the man’s neck is a dash of vibrance in an already radiant painting.
