A small wagon train travels through a rugged ravine in the midst of a red desert. The scene is painted with heavily textured brushstrokes, which add depth and dimension to the landscape. Best, a prominent landscape painter of early 20th-century Northern California, was particularly known for his depictions of the Southwest and the Grand Canyon. Here, he captures the raw beauty of the desert and the tenacity of the small band of Navajo people as they journey through this harsh and unforgiving terrain.
