Birger Sandzén (1871-1954)
Autumnal Landscape, 1936
Oil on canvas
Canvas: 30” x 40”
Signed Lower Right: Birger Sandzén / 1936
In this landscape Sandzén’s technique can be called chromo-luminarism, effectively applying small strokes of color to the canvas which are distinguishable upon close observation, but are perceived from a distance as a blended, cohesive picture. The palette is beautifully autumnal, consisting largely of warm hues but defined by deeply saturated teals and purples.
Sandzén was best known for his landscapes, most of which were produced while he was an art professor in the United States. He became the principal art instructor at Bethany College while still in his twenties. Though highly sought after, Sandzén remained at Bethany College for over 45 years out of dedication. Bethany College is located in Lindsborg, Kansas and is also known as Little Sweden.
This painting is recorded as #2732 in the Sandzén card catalogue of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery.
