A herd of horses stand at the banks of a river and against a desert landscape made ethereal by the luminescent green of the sunset and billowing, smoke-like clouds. Most of the painting, from the smears of color in the sky to the horses bending in conformity, adheres to a horizontal linearity. The tall horse overlooking the pack and the distant buttes command the viewer’s attention in a defiance of the strictures of the painting’s composition itself.
